I was standing in your shoes in 2008. I had a newly licensed teen driver and was not sure what steps I should take to ensure that my teen would have a safe driving experience the first few years and become a lifetime safe driver. Information on a positive proactive merit-based method for parents to communicate and coach their new driver was not easily available and accessible. I contacted the National Safety Council and the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and embarked on an extensive research project. I attended meetings and presentations about teen driver safety. I interviewed and talked extensively with parents, driving instructors, teen drivers, police personnel and district attorneys. The parent to teen coaching program, Before The Wheel™, was developed as a result of this research. On April 1, 2009, Before The Wheel™, the first teen driver safety positive messaging program was published on the Internet and presented as a newsletter at the Waukesha County Technical College Small Business Expo, Waukesha, WI. I look forward to hearing from you on what you think of the latest release, Teen Driver: Newly Licensed First Year Program; Licensed To Drive at 65 Miles Per Hour: Now What? and all our published materials that put your teen safely in the driver’s seat.
