Currently in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Driver’s Education consists of 50 hours of training to include 30 hours of classroom instruction, 12 hours of behind the wheel training, 6 hours of back seat observation as another student is driving, as well as a two hour parent class. According to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), students can start classroom lessons when they are 15 years and 9 months (to the day or older), but all in car lessons (behind the wheel and / or observation) require students have a learner’s permit. In Massachusetts a teenager can get a permit as soon as he or she turns 16 years old (to the day or older) by taking a 25 minute/25 question permit written exam at any RMV full service branch. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles mandates that parents attend a special 2 hour class. This “parent’s class” will provide insight into what your child is learning in Driver’s Ed and explain the current laws that will most affect you and your child. We will also explain how parent’s can reinforce what their children are learning as well as how they can be positive role models behind the wheel themselves. Strategies will also be given when taking your son/daughter out during the 40 hours (minimum) at home driving. Making this time together more enjoyable and less stressful for both will be discussed. At the completion of all parent’s classes, certificates are issued. This class certificate is valid for five (5) years. So if you have another child who will be attending Driver’s Ed in that time frame, this class will count!

Private (one on one) driving lessons are available for drivers of any age (must have on person a valid USA permit or License). Whether you are a new driver who needs an additional lesson or two or three etc., or someone who has not driven in years, or comes from another country and would like to get prepared to obtain a Massachusetts license/ road test, or coming back from a frightening accident/mishap, or a middle age adult who has an elderly parent who you would like evaluated for safety, command, control, awareness, skill etc. We call this a “Road Competency evaluation.” Note With Road Competency evaluations, I ask if the Son or Daughter or like relative join us (as an observer) so he/she can witness the whole process. I will also provide a written letter within a few days with the results and recommendation whether or not the elderly person is safe and fit to drive. The cost for this service is $100.00. The cost of a private (one on one) instruction/lesson as discussed above, is $80.00 per hour. Please note if you an Alum of MDA, the hourly rate is $70.00. Whether you took Driver’s Education here at Middlesex Driving Academy or not, we are can assist you with taking a road test. We offer daily appointments at local RMV branches as well as weekend appointments. Please contact our office for our weekend schedule and to register for them as well. The cost for a weekend Road Test is $150.00 and as with all our Road Test sponsorship’s, all need to be paid prior to the test date. Take your Road Test with Us - Call us (leave voicemail if necessary) OR electronically Send OR Mail OR Fax OR drop off in our mailbox (next to our front door) a completed MDA Road Test Sponsorship Form with a check for $150.00 for a weekend road test here at our school, or at theWilmington RMV Road Test or $175.00 for a Watertown R/T. Once received (and all eligibility requirements are met) we will work together to book your road test. We typically go to Wilmington RMV during weekday R/T’s however, we will also use the Watertown RMV if we can get an earlier date.. Cambridge and Lawrence (call for details) RMV’s we use these as an alternative test location. Also, consider a Private Lesson and or a Pre-Test warm-up just prior to your road test in the similar area as the exam. Call us and we’ll give you all the details.
