DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMS - MARYLAND LOCATIONS ONLY The Driver Improvement Program is an Maryland Motor Vehicle Admistration required course for those drivers who have a total of 8+ points on their driving record and, for those drivers with a Provisional License who are convicted of a moving violation. The MVA will notify drivers who must take the course by mail. Drivers must check their MVA letter to locate the due date for completing this course. Drivers, whose license has been suspended or revoked, must complete the course before their license will be re-instated. Some drivers voluntarily take the course. Students are requested to bring their MVA letter, court letter or reinstatement and a pen to the course. This course can also be done online click home at the top and then driver improvement link under announcements to get started. Our Kensington Location has testing by appointment only. We can schedule your appointments at your convenience and help you meet your goal of obtaining your driver's license according to your time frame Insurance and liability -- the owner of the vehicle in which you take your mentoring lessons is financially responsible for any damage which you may cause to his/her vehicle, other people's vehicle and property and, any injury to other people. At EMDS you are fully covered by our insurance. EMDS can offer and insurance certificate to any student that completes at least six hours of behind the wheel with any of our instructors. Virginia Students Only The minimum age for obtaining a Virginia driver's license is sixteen years and three months. To obtain a Virginia learner's permit you must be at least fifteen years and six months. If you are under age 19, you must provide proof of successful completion of a state-approved driver education program and you must hold a learner's permit at least nine months before you can receive a driver's license. If you are age 19 or older and you have never held a license issued by any state, U.S. territory or foreign country, you must provide proof of successful completion of a state-approved driver education program or you must have held a learner's permit at least 30 days before taking the road skills test. You may get your learner's permit when you reach 15 years and 6 months of age. It allows you to operate a motor vehicle when a licensed driver at least 21 years of age is seated beside you. The driver accompanying you may be 18 years of age if he or she is your legal guardian, brother, sister, half-brother, half-sister, step-brother or step-sister. The driver accompanying you must hold a valid driver's license, be alert and able to assist you and be legally permitted to drive. When you apply for a learner's permit, you will also complete the application process for your driver's license and pay the fees for both the permit and license. You will be required to pass a vision screening and the two-part knowledge exam.Cellular Telephone/Wireless Telecommunications Device Restrictions Virginia's cellular telephone law restricts a driver under age 18 who holds a learner's permit or driver's license from using any cellular telephone or any other wireless telecommunications device, regardless of whether such device is or is not hand-held. International Drivers An international license holder has to obtain a District of Columbia license after moving to the state for permanent residency or full time job. Vision test and medical screening, written test, and driving test are required to be able to obtain DC driver's license. Teen Drivers If you are under 18, your parent or guardian must sign a consent form. If you are between the ages of 16 years and 20 years old, you will be placed in the Graduated Licensing Program also known as GRAD (Gradual Rearing of Adult Drivers). Prepare for written exam District of Columbia DMV requires all applicants to pass a knowledge test with questions on District of Columbia traffic laws, road signs, and rules of safe driving. Even if you have prior driving experience, you will find it difficult to pass this written exam without thoroughly studying DC traffic laws and road signs. ONLY- NO classroom is required or any set number of behind the wheel lessons. EMDS recommends at least 6 hours of behind the wheel driving for all age students obtaining their driver's license for the first time. You may obtain a driver's license once you take and pass the eye test, the knowledge test, and the skills road test. You may not obtain a DC driver's license while maintaining a valid license from another jurisdiction. A driver's license is valid for up to five years for US citizens, and this period may vary for non-US citizens according to the US immigration expiration date. In-car skills include basic maneuvers (including parallel parking), defensive driving techniques, and road driving in a variety of environments. To pass the behind the wheel part of Driver's Education the student needs to complete all six hours and pass the performance criteria for each lesson. Once the student has completed both the classroom and the behind the wheel parts, Easy Method Driving School will process and transmit all information to the MVA (Maryland students only) Q: How old do I have to be to take driver education in Maryland? 15 years old. Q: Do I need to have a learner's permit to take driver education in Maryland? As of October 1, 2008, MVA Regulations allow students who do not yet possess a Learner's Permit to complete the 30 hours of in-class instruction, but require students to have a Maryland Learner's Permit to participate in the 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training. Q: How old should my student be to start the State Driver Education Program, and what is the best way to progress through the training? The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration and EMDS recommend that students start Driver Education at age 15, progress through the 30 hours of in-class instruction to prepare for the MVA Learner's Permit Exam which a student can take at 15 years and 9 months and then complete the behind-the-wheel portion of the training after the Learner's Permit is obtained. It is best to stretch the training over a period of time to give each student the opportunity to absorb both the in-class and behind-the-wheel material. Q: What if I miss a class? Students are permitted under MVA guidelines to miss 12 hours of class without having to re take the entire course. All missed classes must be made up in a reasonable length of time. Q: How old do I have to be to get a learner's permit in Maryland? You have to be 15 years and 9 months old. You do not have to have taken Driver Education to get a learner's permit. You must study the Maryland Driver Handbook and take a test at a full service MVA location. Q: What is the Graduated Licensing Program? The program requires novice drivers to gain more driving experience with a supervising driver and gradually move up through the licensing process until full license status is achieved. Under the graduated licensing system, non-commercial license applicants, who have never held a driver's license, must progress through three licensing levels: Level 1 Learner's permit (15 years and 9 months) Level 2 Provisional license (After Driver Education) Level 3 Full license Washington D.C Students Only No Classroom or behind the wheel is required. Over 19 students must have a learners permit to start lessons. No set number of classroom or behind the wheel is required. EMDS recommends at least 9 hours for new students.
