Shippers’ Choice of Virginia
Description

A truck driving school experience like no other

Shippers’ Choice of Virginia, Inc. was formed as a professional tractor-trailer driver training school in January 1993. We have been training students for more than 24 years! No school in Virginia has been training drivers for longer or provided better CDL training. Our over 25,000 graduates are the proof. We were founded and started operations in Woodford, Virginia, and we have been growing ever since. We just opened our newest location in Suffolk!

See if you qualify for zero dollar grants or tuition reimbursement!

As a private school, we are unlike any other training program. Students are not rushed in a boot-camp style system. Our instructors bring decades of experience to the classroom and help students build their knowledge and skills the right way. By the end of training, our students are ready to join the fleet of drivers as safe and dependable entry-level professionals .

My experience at SC was not satisfactory. Much of the instruction was good. Several very good and hard working instructors, particularly Keith, who has since left, and Greg. Mike, one of the managers and DMV examiner also solid. Beyond them, not very good. Classroom instruction was poor beyond Keith and Greg. Time management was terrible. Instructors often did not know their assignments for the day at starting time. Range instruction routinely started 15 minutes or more late and ended earlier than necessary, with everyone sitting in the classroom waiting for time to clock out. Biggest problem by far was inadequate time in the truck for both maneuvers and road training. Often got only two turns each at maneuvers in a.m. and p.m sessions, totaling 3+ hours. Equipment maintenance is terrible... Read More

Equipment maintenance is terrible. Class B bus students in my class did not even have a bus until almost the end, trained in a dump truck. General management is seemingly nonexistent. There is no syllabus, no training materials, no visuals. Even the pre-trip document is outdated, requiring only in-house editing. I chose SC because they are “approved” by a desired employer and the waiting time at CDS was too long. Should have waited. Read Less

Intractably disorganized and ill run. Onsite management needs to be much more engaged in day-to-day training quality, but aren't. Director and assistant director would benefit from asking students individually how their training is, but don't. School says it provides 160 hours of the mandatory CDL instruction; actual instruction tells a different story, because there is a lot of inactivity for students on the range, etc. All too often, range instruction was limited to 1-2 tractor-trailers and 1-2 instructors for Class A CDL students during 2 hour afternoon sessions. My class was 25 students; some are up to 40 students. Do the math on how much students actually get in the cab over 4 weeks. It's not much. If this is really a school and not a money mill, why do so many students fail the VA CDL tests the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc time?.. Read More

If this is really a school and not a money mill, why do so many students fail the VA CDL tests the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc time? Several student took up to 10 months to finally pass the VA CDL road test. That is not reflective of what a school should be. Instructors (like Greg C) and the secretary are great, but the rest of school is very frustrating and exasperating. Go to CDS instead. Read Less
