• Although Winding Road Driving Academy cannot guarantee someone will pass the driving exam, they will work with you on an individual basis to assist you in learning the required knowledge and skills.  Winding Road Driving Academy recognizes that many individuals do not need special equipment to drive but do need customized instruction to learn how to drive.
• Winding Road Driving Academy is a Class B Driver Training school certified by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
• Our instructor is fully qualified, holding a Certificate of Driver’s Education, as well as having experience working with special needs individuals. She is a certified Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) and a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC).
• Winding Road Driving Academy is a registered vendor with the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services.
• Our instructor is a certified National Safety Council Defensive Driving Instructor.
• Our instructor is a certified Drive-To-Work Driver’s Manual Course Instructor.

Services Offered:

• Consultation

Together through conversation, we will determine where you are in the process of obtaining your driver’s license, and what your specific needs are related to obtaining your learner’s permit and driver’s license.  This will include identifying any special circumstances impacting your learning or your ability to operate a vehicle; exploring any driving experiences you have had, what went well and what did not; and determining what your learning style might be.    Referral to a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) for an evaluation may be necessary in some cases to ensure you are able to drive safely with or without specialized equipment.

• Classroom

The 8-hour Driver’s Manual (3 exam failure) Course is required for a student to continue taking the written learner’s permit exam if the student has already failed it three times. The course is offered in two 4-hour sessions so that the student can study and come back with questions. The goal is for the student to not only obtain the certificate to continue taking the exam but to learn the material and how it applies to actual driving. This course is offered in Leesburg and Fairfax, VA.

The 8-hour Driver Improvement Clinic (defensive driving course) is offered in Leesburg and Fairfax, VA. Students under age 20 are required by the DMV to take this course if they get a moving violation no matter if they have gone to court or just paid the fine. This course can also be required by the courts if over 20 years of age or taken voluntarily to reduce the number of points on your driving record. This course is offered in Leesburg, VA, and Fairfax, VA in two 4-hour sessions. It is scheduled on demand to meet your individual needs and advertised publicly. Although online training can be customized to your schedule, it may not be an effective learning environment for you. 

The 36-hour Classroom portion of Driver’s Education is also offered in Leesburg.

• In-car

In-car training consists of private driving instruction for students of all ages. For students who need extra time in the car beyond Behind the Wheel training, adults who want to learn to drive and take the road skills test at DMV, and for licensed driver’s who are new to the area and what to gain confidence driving in our traffic. In-car training is available in Loudoun County and Western Fairfax County.

• Behind the Wheel

The program must include 14 in-car instruction periods – 7 periods of driving and 7 periods of observation, including the final road skills examination.  Requires two students to be in the car at the same time – one student drives while the other is an active observer.  It is required for all drivers under the age of 18 and is an option for older drivers who have completed the classroom portion of driver’s education. BTW is offered in Loudoun County and Western Fairfax County.
